Charles Joseph “Charlie” McDonnell (born 1 October 1990, also known as charlieissocoollike) is an English teenager and YouTube vlogger from Bath, Somerset. He is the third most subscribed YouTuber in the United Kingdom.

He first came to prominence when a video entitled “How To Get Featured on YouTube” was indeed featured on YouTube’s homepage. Prior to this he had fewer than 150 subscribers, but this number increased dramatically, skyrocketing to over 4,000 in a matter of days. In celebration of gaining 25,000 subscribers, Charlie has asked for challenge suggestions from his subscribers, and he completes them in a series of 25 videos entitled “Challenge Charlie”, or CC. He has completed eight so far, one of which was suggested by Phillip Schofield and his daughter Molly, for Charlie to do the dance that accompanies the Hoedown Throwdown. He also used to video blog every week on another YouTube account along with four other YouTube personalities. The name given to this collaboration by McDonnell is “fiveawesomeguys”, a spin-off of the American “fiveawesomegirls” collaboration. In a vlog posted on 28 October 2008, he announced that the project was set to end on New Year’s Eve 2008. The project is now officially over, although a few members mentioned they may still post on the channel. Charlie has since posted a large range of videos on the site, including his most viewed, “How to be English”.

On 6 August 2008, Charlie showcased his musical talent with a song titled “Blink”, based on the Doctor Who episode of the same name. This song was in the musical genre “Time Lord Rock” (or Trock, shortened by the same convention as the Harry Potter fandom’s Wrock), which was named by Charlie’s friend Alex Day (known as ‘Nerimon’ on YouTube). Alex wrote the first song, “Awful Lot Of Running”, to be classified as Trock, and “Blink” was the second. They have also have a song titled “Exterminate, Regenerate”. (Although Alex Day did invent the label Time Lord Rock/Trock, he did not invent the concept of writing songs about Doctor Who. Fans of the long-running series have been writing songs about it since shortly after its inception in the early 1960s, including the hit single “Doctorin’ the Tardis” by The Timelords.) Since its conception, Time Lord Rock has been mentioned in Doctor Who Magazine. Chameleon Circuit, a Trock band consisting of Alex Day, Charlie McDonnell, Liam Dryden, and “Ginger” Chris Beattie, released a self-titled album on 1 June 2009.

On 30 September 2008, to celebrate his 18th birthday, Charlie and his friend Alex Day dyed and then shaved their hair off whilst live on blogtv for a period of 7 and a half hours, in aid of Cancer Research UK. They managed to raise £4884.19. The broadcast viewership peaked at 4,500. Another friend, Jazza John McMillan-Clenaghan (known as ‘Rhymingwithoranges’ on YouTube) promised to shave his head if they hit £4000 and did so about a month later with the help from Kristina Horner (known as ‘italktosnakes’ and Monday on the collab-channel ‘fiveawesomegirls’ on YouTube)[citation needed].

On 24 February 2009, Charlie dyed his entire body purple in his fifth challenge in a series of 25 in a video titled, ‘The Purple Man’. This video was unexpectedly successful and very quickly rose to his 2nd most viewed video of all time after being featured in the UK.

Charlie featured with three other YouTubers in the series Chartjackers on BBC Switch. The other YouTubers involved in the project are James Hill (Jimmy0010), Jonathan Haggart (JohnnyDurham19) and Alex Day (Nerimon). The Chartjackers project involves the four guys attempting to achieve a UK No 1 pop hit within 10 weeks using resources provided by other YouTube community members. Over the course of the project they will solicit lyrics, music, performers, stylists and so forth to record the song and video via the “Chartjackersproject” YouTube channel. Their progress is shown on brief BBC Switch updates on the “Chartjackers” YouTube channel.

In October 2009, Charlie was named as one of a number of YouTube users who would be participating in a project called “RNLI Shout”. The aim of the project is to raise money to purchase a lifeboat for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

Since July 2009, an outro by Stephen Fry has been included at the end of Charlie’s YouTube videos.

On his “Twitter” page Charlie has received 42,020 (Oct 4th 2009) followers from advertising his page on his Youtube channel.

Charlie was interviewed on BBC News. He also participated in the Euro 2008 Zeitgeist Google conference, where he spoke about YouTube along with Mia Rose (miaarose) and Peter Oakley (geriatric1927). This was a conference to honour online users of popular websites[citation needed].

He was one of three online guests on the BBC chat show Lily Allen and Friends in 2008.

He was also featured in a recent advertising campaign for Confused.com, speaking directly to his camcorder about the savings the site offered and its new layout and ease of use. The clips featuring Charlie are integrated with similar testimonials from other ‘customers’, including occasional clips from other well-known Youtubers.

He featured as a guest on Robert Llewellyn’s Web series Carpool in the episode broadcast on 15 May 2009.

In Early June 2009, Charlie visited Los Angeles to attend the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2009. He attended Microsoft’s Xbox press conference, where ‘Project Natal’ was announced. Two days later, he was invited to a ’special area of E3′ and was one of 30 exclusive people from around the world to try out Natal. He explained this in one of a group of videos he produced and uploaded to a new channel on YouTube for the trip called ‘CharlieAtE3

Justine Ezarik (pronounced [iːˈzeɪ.ɹɪk], born March 20, 1984), is a viral video comedienne, freelance graphic/web designer and video editor originally based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She is best known as iJustine, a lifecaster who communicated directly with her thousands of viewers on her Justin.tv channel, ijustine.tv. She has made more than 200 videos, including satires on such subjects as Lost and parkour. Her videos have received more than 25 million views, 16 million on YouTube alone. Her popularity is such that a video about her wanting to order a cheeseburger got 600,000 YouTube views in a week. She is sometimes described as a “lifecasting star,” a “new media star,” or one of the web’s most popular lifecasters. In 2008, she relocated her base of operation from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Los Angeles, California.

iJustine Ezarik is known for her “300-page iPhone bill”, which followed the first month of service after the introduction of the iPhone in 2007. The viral video earned her international attention and celebrity. The bad publicity that AT&T earned as a result of her video featuring her reviewing this bill and similar stories coincided with the announcement that detailed billing would become optional for iPhone users. As of June 1, 2009, she had over a half a million Twitter followers, and nearly 100,000 subscribers to the iJustine YouTube channel.

iJustine Ezarik was also featured in the August 28, 2007 weekly installment of Kevin Sites’ People of the Web series on Yahoo! News along with Justin Kan, the creator of Justin.TV. Sites called her “the star of this network so far,” and said “she has model good looks and easy cyber savvyness that attracts both technophiles and casual users alike.” The final cut of the interview video included footage from the live web cast of the interview that showed Ezarik’s webcam viewpoint. When Sites asked her to turn off her lifecasting equipment later in the interview, he noted that “at once the conversation seemed more relaxed and natural,” and she discussed the difficulty of having people watching and publicly judging her all day.

In an interview published September 21, 2007 she discussed her lifecasting activities with a reporter for TG Daily, telling him that she has tried not to change her personal routine, except that she now vocalizes her thoughts by talking to herself for the benefit of the audience. She also now concerns herself with what the people around her are saying, especially if they try to share private information like phone numbers. In discussing her personal safety concerns, she said, “I’ve had a lot of people show up places that I am, call hotels and restaurants that I’m at. Everything has to be taken into consideration. I’m also very lucky that nothing bad has happened so far. Makes me think I should quit before it does!

Ezarik was also hired to appear in three a national TV ad campaign for Mozy, an award-winning online backup and recovery system. In April 2009, she had approximately 50,000 MySpace friends and the system limit of 5,000 Facebook friends. An April 2009, USA Today article credited her with 386,000 Twitter followers. By June 2009, she had 590,000 Twitter followers, 94,000 subscribers to the iJustine YouTube channel and 25,000 Facebook fans. The USA Today story goes on to describe how she has scaled down her lifecasting because of its deleterious impact on her life. Carl’s Jr. has hired a team of YouTube stars, including Ezarik to produce made-for-web ads for their new Portobello Mushroom Six-Dollar Burger on the Carl’s Jr. YouTube channel, each endorser’s YouTube page, and other Google-related media outlets. Following the August 6, 2009, Twitter Denial-of-service attack, Ezarik was featured in The Wall Street Journal describing her coping mechanisms, such as repeatedly tapping the F5 function key (the refresh button), for Twitter outages.

Lim Jeong-hyun, also known by the online alias funtwo, is a South Korean guitarist known for his cover of the piece Canon Rock. The YouTube user with the alias “guitar90″ is not Lim Jeong-hyun, but an unknown person who just happened to upload Lim’s video. This has been cleared up in his latest interviews. Quoting from the video, the interview clarifies, “someone else called guitar90 who grabbed the video and put it on YouTube where it became a sensation”.

Lim Jeong-hyun played and recorded his cover of Canon Rock during 2005. He uploaded his video onto the popular South Korean music website called Mule.co.kr. It was then uploaded to YouTube by a viewer nicknamed “guitar90″, under the title guitar. It was not long before the video gathered popularity and viewers speculated as to who was beneath the baseball cap.

Guitar90’s video is among the twenty most viewed and fifth most “favorited” video in YouTube history with 64,307,881 views and counting. At its peak, the video was the fourth most viewed video on YouTube.

Lim’s cover of Canon Rock has been mentioned on CNN, 20/20, The New York Times, and National Public Radio, in addition to MBC news, CBC Radio, South KBS news, and other South Korean news stations.

Many viewers have speculated and thought of the video as fake because the audio is not synchronized with the video. Lim later stated to The New York Times that this had to do with the fact that “he recorded the audio and video independently and then matched them inexactly.” The performance itself was recorded in two parts, and edited together. An image of a traffic light was used to make the transition.

In addition to playing the work of others, Lim has now started to arrange well-known music by himself. He composed a holiday card to his fans called “Carol Rock (funtwo Is Coming to Town)”, a rock version of “Santa Claus is Coming to Town”. He also played Dream Theater’s “Overture 1928″, and recently he posted a video of himself performing Antonio Vivaldi’s “Summer” from the Four Seasons, one of Vivaldi’s most famous works.

Lim has expressed no wish to carry on playing as a professional guitarist. However his online fame has allowed him to play to live audiences three times— once for the South Korean ambassador in Washington, DC, then again at the KORUS festival the same year. At the KORUS festival, Lim played improvised, altered versions of the Korean national anthem and the American national anthem. The third time he played was in 2008, the 22 November at the YouTube Live festival where he performed with Joe Satriani, he played first a mix of Canon Rock and Joe’s “Surfing With the Alien” and then “Canon Rock”. In the same interview in which he stated his wish to carry on playing guitar simply as a hobby, he also rated his own playing a modest 50/60 out of 100.

The beginning of the music video for Weezer’s song “Pork and Beans” is set in Lim’s iconic room, with the various members playing their various instruments. The video as a whole contains references to numerous other internet phenomena.

Lim now lives in New Zealand where he is studying computer science at school.
